UNCOMPLICATED INVERTER DRIVE FOR RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHING USING STANDARD PERSONAL COMPUTER
 By L. Abraham; W. Frank
 [View]
 [Download]
Abstract: Today, often special and complex computing systems arc common in laboratories for investigations of inverter drive control. Such systems contain mostly Digital Signal Processors and/or microcontrollers. But it is also possible to control drives using a simple personal computer (PC) system, which includes usual commercial add-on components. With such systems, even interrupt driven pulse-width-modulation control methods can be realized. But the interruptprocess of a PC is more complicated and takes much more time than that of a signal-processor. A short introduction into interrupt processing is given. A system, which complies with the demands of drive control is described. First practical results and methods for an advanced interrupt handling are presented.

Abstract: A demo version of simulation program PECAN (Power Electronic Circuit Analysis) can be downloaded from Internet address http://www.elkraft.unit.no/-andersen/ and used freely for educational and other purposes. A student can enter component values simply by answering questions, while a circuit is displayed on the screen. He doesn't have to learn how to make up cryptic input files.

A LABVIEW-BASED LABORATORY COURSE ON THREE-PHASE ELECTRIC MACHINERY UNDER UNSYMMETRICAL OPERATING CONDITIONS

Abstract: A laboratory course on the behaviour of the three-phase electric machinery under unsymmetrical operating conditions is presented. The course aims to show several applications of the symmetrical component theory and to verify experimentally the results of the electric machinery mathematical models. A complete monitoring system for three-phase machinery is implemented using the Lab VIEW software installed on a standard PC equipped with a low-cost DAQ-board. Description of the behaviour of three-phase transformer and induction motor is outlined both for symmetrical and unsymmetrical operating conditions. For each operating condition, experimental verifications are presented. The whole laboratory course does not require dedicated electric machinery and the measure system can be easily implemented on a portable notebook computer. The system can be further modified, introducing simulation of measurements and interactivity, to support self-learning of the topics by the students.

Abstract: This paper presents a software package for simulation of electrical drives useful for training and computed assisted education. The software collects the experiences of several years of study and research in the field of electrical machines and drives, including conventional and new kinds of motors, PWM techniques, vector control of AC drives, parameters identification and observers, fuzzy control, digital control. By incorporating the different procedures in a single package and by adding a user friendly interface and plot capabilities, a powerful tool has been obtained, useful to introduce the end-course students to the most up-to-date solutions in the field of electrical drives.

Abstract: Start-up process of induction squirrel cage motors can produce many problems to the working mechanism and to the other consumers. The easiest way for understanding start-up transients and examine the way how they could be suppressed is with computer simulation program. In the presented simulation program for education purposes start-up process with linear voltage change and voltage change with SCR are analyzed.

Abstract: An integrated laboratory for modeling, simulation and control of DC motors has been developed at University Rovira i Virgili for undergaduate electrical engineering education. Students develop a closed-loop model of the electromechanical system and refine the model until computer simulation results and experimental results agree. PWM and Sliding Mode Control with state feedbak are the main control strategies employed in the experiments. The simulation software runs on a workstation and the measurements are performed and displayed in a modular equipment which minimizes the tangle of wires on the work table.

Abstract: A computer-based and highly interactive test system for electric machines and drive systems is explained in this paper. The paper describes the test system developed for the undergraduate electrical machines and drives teaching laboratory. The implementation details of the system are given and the problems identified in the conventional method of delivering the experiments are discussed together with the proposed solutions. Some sample front panels of the experiments are also given and some planned future developments are highlighted.

Abstract: Service quality of power industrial systems has a growing impact on reliability and efficiency, specially by weak networks, where admissible power factor, voltage and current distortion limits should be met. Therefore, tools are needed for understanding the phenomena and for proper design of converters and compensation installations. The aim of the paper is to show with an example the application of the software package HARMONIX as a tool for teaching the fundamentals concerning the analysis and design of power systems with power converters with multiple branch harmonic filters.

Abstract: Given the growing importance of simulation as a tool in industry to shorten the concept-to-product interval, this paper outlines features of a new simulator called SIMPLORER® for analyzing power electronic circuits. The paper highlights the useful features of the package, in general, not found in many ofthe popular simulation tools. The software is evaluated by simulating two novel circuit topologies - a three-phase, three-switch CUK AC-DC converter and the universal input unity power factor SEPIC based converter - in terms of its simplicity in use, accuracy, execution speed and numerical robustness. The paper also shows the comparison to results from a hardware prototype for the SEPIC based converter.

Abstract: An important aim of the electrical designer or of a teacher is to represent the real behaviour of a drive by means of a model. For this purpose there arc different tools but for most of them, a hard training is needed. The paper shows a practical experience about the building and the use of didactic tools for graduated and undergraduate students. The use of this tool permits different educational structures to dispose of a virtual laboratory for teaching and testing the theory applications.

Abstract: The SEMDEM program has been developed in response to the educational needs in the domain of physics of semiconductor devices. It helps to examine the physical phenomena taking place inside the semiconductor power devices, like p-i-n diode and pn-p-n thyristor, during their operation both in static and dynamic conditions. During the Trondheim simulations, the user can follow the progress inside the device in distributions of such quantities as potential, electron and hole density, electron and hole current density as well as the actual electrical· parameters corresponding to these distributions. In the separate windows he can follow. the actual position on a static V-I characteristic or transient curent and voltage waveforms.
