Abstract   A laboratory course on the behaviour of the three-phase electric machinery under unsymmetrical operating conditions is presented. The course aims to show several applications of the symmetrical component theory and to verify experimentally the results of the electric machinery mathematical models. A complete monitoring system for three-phase machinery is implemented using the Lab VIEW software installed on a standard PC equipped with a low-cost DAQ-board. Description of the behaviour of three-phase transformer and induction motor is outlined both for symmetrical and unsymmetrical operating conditions. For each operating condition, experimental verifications are presented. The whole laboratory course does not require dedicated electric machinery and the measure system can be easily implemented on a portable notebook computer. The system can be further modified, introducing simulation of measurements and interactivity, to support self-learning of the topics by the students.
