Abstract: To control hegawatts we can now use thyrithe gate turn-off thyrister, the giant transistor or the insulated gate bipolar transistor. Present and exepted future ratings are compared and it is noted that the fields controlled thyristor will shortly be a serious competitor of the shaller devices, whilst the fields effect transistor is likely to remain an exceptional contender at megawatt ratings.

Abstract: Since deliveries of series-production traction vehicles with three-phase power transmission commenced in the early 80's, the concepts and components used have been improved in numerous details, in order to provide an optimum solution to the operators' requirements. At present, decisive incentives come from the availability of large GTO thyristors, which allow simplified circuitry, further improvement in performance characteristics and above all the implementation of new improved drive concepts.

Abstract: This paper presents a survey of the commutation phenomena in power semiconductor devices used in static converters. lt deals with the determination of the converter structures which allow to exploit in the best conditions the available semiconductor devices, with the purpose of minimizing the losses and the parasitic interferences.
