Abstract: Based on a continuing progress of power semiconductor devices and modules, an attempt is made to analyze the dynamics in the field of power electronics. Although discrete devices, like the GTO, are likely to dominate high power applications, possibly for another 10 years, FET-driven devices, llke the IGBT, are expected to expand further into medium power applications. In addition, economic reasons will promote the use of modules for applications involving gradually higher power. Power integrated clrcuits and smart devices in turn might gain in volume but may remain limited in power due to disspation problems.

Abstract: The power density of coverters is determined by their frequency of operation, the amount of energy processed in each cycle, the total energy stored in the converters' reactive elements and the power dissipation in the system. A method for evaluation and comparison of converter topologies is based on the above concepts and allows to identify relative benefits or shortcomings. The method allows also to estimate the effect of frequency change on the power density of a converter.

POWER QUALITY, POWER ELECTRONICS AND CONTROL

Abstract: A brief historical introduction of the development of considerations regarding power quality in networks, as well as their compensation, is presented. The question of different power theories and power components in networks with distortion of voltage and/or current is discussed. Compensation techniques to filter distortion from power networks are briefly reviewed, with accent on the most recent work. The uses of input converters, dynamic filters for non-active power and hybrid power filters are covered. The paper includes a selected bibliography of 300 literature references.
