Abstract: A three-level power converter system using module type IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) for Shinkansen trains WdS developed. It can achieve lower acoustic noise from transformers and motors and smaller line current harmonics, because the converter offer fuster switching operation and three-level output voltage. In addition, a simple power unit is also achieved, because of the module type IGBTs. The system has been installed in the STAR21 testing train for Shinkansen routes of East Japan Railway Company and its usefulness was evaluated. The superiority of the three-level power converter system using IGBTs to the conventional one is verified by testing results.

Abstract: This paper describes a new generation of Drive Control Units (DCU) developed to control the Adtranz IGBT converter family in traction applications. The focus for the application has especially been cost limited mass transit applications, but due to the control boards flexibility it is possible to apply it in simpler loco or two system configurations. The Drive Control Units fit perfectly into the MITRAC Communication & Control world on one hand and the Adtranz IGBT converter family on the other hand. It is possible to configure the DCU by means of software for the application with both DC and AC supply systems as line converter control unit, motor converter control unit, or auxiliary converter control unit. An optimization regarding reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) has been performed and special care has been taken to fulfill the safety case requirements which become more and more important. Other not less important design aspects have been commissioning and diagnosis.

Abstract: The first power converter for traction application, employing new 3.3 kV IGBT modules is presented. Two different cooling systems (forced air ventilation and liquid circulation) have been developed, resulting in different power ratings. Details of electrical and thermal design arc reported, and compliance to 30 years lifetime reliability goal has been calculated. Performances of the converter arc shown, by means of experimental test results.

Abstract: A 15 MVA voltage source converter for the propulsion system of the TRANSRAPID maglev system has been developed. The high power could be realized by the use of three-level technique and high efficient water cooling. The design features and test results of the prototype converter are described.
