![]() | A Simple yet Efficient Doubly-Fed Drive/Generator Controller
By Hamza CHAAL, Milutin JOVANOVIC, Dave ATKINSON, WenJun CHEN
Abstract: In this work a potentially universal algorithm for independent torque and reactive power control of doubly-fed machines is proposed. The method is inspired from the very essence of the machines dynamics and features an important asset compared to other model based approaches involving machine parameters or position encoder. It requires current and voltage measurements of the power side only. Applications include high performance drives and variable speed generators. Evidence of the good performance is shown through simulations and laboratory experiment.

![]() | Analysis of a deeply saturated sensorless PMSynRel drive for an automotive application
By Shuang ZHAO, Oskar WALLMARK, Mats LEKSELL
Abstract: This paper presents an method of mapping feasible region for a sensorless control PMSynRel drive usingthe resulting position error signal. Thanks to the rotor anisotropy, the rotor position can be detected at low speeds by means of injecting high frequency voltage, either a pulsating voltage vector in the estimated synchronous frame or a rotating vector in the stator frame, on top of the fundamental excitation. However, the resulting position error signal is degraded and distorted by magnetic saturation (including crosssaturation) and spatial inductance harmonics. Therefore, the feasible region is used to find the stable operating points. Instead of mapping the inductances, which is time consuming, position error signal is used to map the feasible sensorless control region. A prediction method of the maximum position estimation error is also presented by taking the spatial inductance harmonics into account. After that, some techniques are presented to compensate the cross-saturation and slot harmonic effects in order to improve the sensorless control quality. Additionally, it is shown how saturation in the rotor bridges affects the initial polarity detection required during startup.

![]() | Position Estimation in a True Asymmetric Cascade H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter
By Kamel SALEH, Mark SUMNER
Abstract: This paper introduces a new method to track the saliency of motor fed by a multilevel inverter throughmeasuring the dynamic current response of the motor line currents due the IGBT switching actions. The method uses only the fundamental PWM waveform (i.e there is no modification to the operationof the multilevel inverter) similar to the fundamental PWM method proposed for a 2-level inverter.Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the complete sensorless speedcontrol of a PM motor driven by such a converter over a wide speed range. Finally the paperintroduces a comparison between the 2-level inverter and the multilevel inverter in terms of thereduction of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) using the fundamental PWM method in both cases.

![]() | Sensorless Control Method with Relatively Low Frequency Signal Injection for Low Acoustic Noise
By Suk-Hwa JUNG, Shinji DOKI, Shigeru OKUMA, Masami FUJITSUNA
Abstract: In this paper, we proposed the new sensorless control approach with relatively low frequency signal injection to reduce acoustic noise and vibration. Filters that are classically used in signal processing of currents are the main obstacle to high dynamic performance and even it make unstable the control system when the signal frequency become low enough that is close to the bandwidth of current controller. To overcome these problems, we proposed to use model-based estimation method instead of filters. It is verified by experiments that dynamic performance of the sensorless control is improved by proposed method compare to the conventional filter-based method.

![]() | Sensorless Control of a Doubly Fed Induction Machine Based on an Extended Kalman Filter
By Cesar SILVA, Eric MALDONADO, Manuel OLIVARES
Abstract: This paper presents a sensorless control strategy for a doubly fed induction machine, usually used as a generator for wind power. The proposed scheme consists of an Extended Kalman Filter fed by the voltages and currents of the stator and rotor in order to provide an estimation of the speed and position of the rotor. The simulation results prove the scheme’s feasibility over a wide range of speed and load.

![]() | Sensorless position control for SPMSM at zero speed and acceleration
By Frédéric ABRY, Aloïs ZGORSKI, Xuefang LIN-SHI, Jean-Marie RETIF
Abstract: This paper proposes a position observation technique for either a salient or non-salient PermanentMagnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). Combining high-frequency signal injection with an ExtendedKalman Filter (EKF), the observer provides highly accurate position estimation over a wide speedrange and even at standstill under heavy load conditions. Experimental results are provided to confirmthe performance and efficiency of the proposed solution.
