Abstract: The work is a tutorial dealing with a class of instruments employed for measuring DC and ULF electric fields. The work reviews some of our previous works, where we found that such sensors can be made explicable through elements related to antenna theory. The operation of many of the common dc field sensors can be explained by appreciating that their performance is that of a modified time-varying dipole. Therefore, an important conclusion is that when the measured field is static, the sensor should become the dynamic entity in the system.
