Abstract: In high current testing laboratories switching systems with a current capability of up to 100kA rms and a switching accuracy of about one degree electrical are needed. Mechanical switches are able to conduct the current, but the variance of the switching time is too high for such an application. A silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is not able to conduct the desired current for more than a few milliseconds. Thus the advantages of both the mechanical switch and the SCR are combined in a hybrid switch by mounting them in parallel. Single phase prototypes for 100kA rms were built. The developed prototypes are described and measuring results are presented in this paper.
