Abstract: The Blackwater HVDC Station is a back-to-back tie connecting the Western Grid of the USA with the Midwestern Power Pool. The owner of the station is Public Service Company of New Mexico. Power is exchanged with Southwestern Public Service Company. Power rating of the converter station is 200 MW. The converter transformers installed in the Blackwater scheme are, for economical reasons, single phase four winding units. Through the specific arrangement of the windings stray reactances can be realized which provide appropriate operating conditions for the converters. This paper describes the effect of the four winding transformer on station design and within this the specific relevance of the stray reactances. Finally it demonstrates which equivalent circuit is suitable for system design studies.
