Abstract: The development of the IGBT-module has made it conceivable to realise single rude-drives for low floor trams. A modular construction with low maintenance requirements is achieved through isolated mounting and forced air cooling. Special measures have to be taken to protect motors and their environment due to the extreme rise of voltage during switching of the IGBTs. Every single rude drive functions with its own control-unit. This type of system enables the separation of actual motor control from the function of protection. Such a system then eases demands on the overall control-device improving functionality and reliability. The control device is built up by the use of 80C166-microcontrollers, the logical functions of the protection-unit are realised with logic cell arrays (LCAs). Actual values of the field-oriented-control are estimated with a digital flux-observer. To compensate calculation times of the microprocessor-system, a prediction of the estimated values is implemented.

Abstract: A drive concept is being developed for a passenger car starting from the currently available battery technology and electric motors. This concept will be the basis of an lntegral Drive Electronics, compactly integrating all electronic components into one unit. The objective of the work is to reduce the cost and to increase the reliability to the level of a fuel driven car.

Abstract: A series of high-power GTO-converters with intermediate d.c. voltage links for use in main line locomotives is described in this paper. This series uses valve device assemblies containing 2-state as well as 3-state pairs of arms. These pairs of arms are equipped with 4.5 kV GTOs for 2.5 kA (2- and 3-state) and 3 kA (only 2-state) switch off current. All valve device assemblies are plug-in units , all using the same housing, with all compenents oil immersed cooled. The combination of the valve device assemblies together with the d.c. link smoothing capacitors, the gate drive units, the control electronics and other apparatus forms the converter assembly. This series of converter assemblies are all designed along the same principles.

Abstract: The drive of the Italian poly-current Pendolino (3kV d.c.-25kV 50 Hz- 15kV 16 2/3 Hz), has been developed combining a four quadrant input converter (which is transformed into a chopper in the case of d.c. feeding) and an inverter-fed asynchronous motor drive. The system has been designed using 4,5 kV-3 kA GTO valves and avoiding any parallel of the valves themselves; in this way a new 2 MW traction unit has been made which presents: i) two four quadrant (or four choppers) converters, ii) an intermediate d.c. constant voltage of 2,4 kV and an impressed voltage inverter connected to four asynchronous motors in parallel. This paper presents the main features of the new train and the structure of the controllers.
