Abstract: Wind powered generation systems provide a renewable source of electricity reducing the use of fossil fuels. The increase in the number of wind farm installations connected to distribution and transmission systems has increased significantly. It is important that the associated protection in both the power system and the wind farm installation does not mal-operate, but trip any faults within the zone of protection and remain stable for faults outside this zone. The mal-operation condition could occur during changes in the operation of both the power system and the wind farm. A Loss of Mains condition, where a portion of the network including the wind farm is islanded from the rest of the network, is one example of such a system change. Unstable operation of protection relays will result in the unnecessary disconnection of customers or network generation capability. Many protection relays are multifiction devices and each function analyse a particular electrical quantity. All these functions must be evaluated to ensure that the protection relays perform correctly irrespective of the possible system conditions associated with the loss of mains condition. In this paper a general survey of the protection functions and related configurations employed in wind farm installations and associated power systems is presented.
