Abstract: This paper proposes a sensorless control system based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). The EKF equations are built in rotor flux oriented synchronous coordinate, so it can easily be used for either non-salient or salient pole motors. Inertia and other mechanic parameters are not needed in this observer. Rotor speed and position can be estimated exactly and then a sensorless control system is built. The initial rotor position and the mechanic parameters are not needed in this system. By some compensation in observer equations, the observer can be always stable and has only one expected equilibrium point. So the motor can start up from any unknown initial positions.

Abstract: It is shown that a full-order observer for current, flux, and speed estimation of sensorless induction motor drives, under the assumption of fast current dynamics, has an equivalent implementations as a reduced-order observer for flux and speed estimation only. This reduced-order observer is analyzed. All gain selections which give stability for all operating conditions, including the regeneration mode (called complete stability), are found. Consequently, all gain selections of the full-order observer gains for which complete stability is obtained, under the assumption stated, are also found. This allows the stability properties of any candidate full-order observer gain selection to be evaluated.

Abstract: This paper investigates the speed and parameter sensitivity of back-emf based sensorless techniques for PM machines. The eigenvalues of the sensorless system are speed dependent leading to performance degradation including reduced command tracking and disturbance rejection. The paper analyses the permanent magnet synchronous machine for both sensor- and sensorless-based torque and position/velocity control.
