Abstract: To realize high power density and cost effective STATCOMs, transformer-less and filter-less designs are desirable. In this paper, a Flying Capacitor Multi-level (FCML) converter is selected and designed for a 6.6 kV five-level STATCOM. To decrease size of the flying capacitor by increasing a switching frequency, the Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole (ARCP) Converter is used, and their parameters are optimized based on loss-implemented simulation. In addition, effect of voltage ripple upon switching energy is discussed, and difference between hard-switched converter and ARCP converter is presented. Finally, the total losses and costs of the hard-switched and soft-switched five-level FCML converter is compared.

Abstract: This paper presents the comparison of two cascaded multilevel inverter, with phase-voltage of the nine levels and applied to drive an induction motor of 500kVA/4160V. Performance indexes used in hereinafter in the comparison are semiconductors power losses, total harmonic distortion and first order distortion factor. The comparisons are developed in three ways; in the first comparison the switching frequency is found. It guarantees that the converters present the same efficiency. In the second comparison the objective is finding the maximum switching frequency that it is gotten in each topology. Finally, in the third comparison, the efficiency which both systems present the same output filter is found.

Abstract: The following paper presents bidirectional switch neutral point clamped three-level inverter topology, which is intended for low voltage applications. The inverter schematic and its principles of operation are presented. Then conduction and switching losses model derivation is proposed. According to obtained model equations, proposed concept is compared with other inverter topologies by means of the efficiency. Finally, some experimental results of BSNPC inverter are presented.
