![]() | Advantages of high power choppers in DC arc furnaces
By P. Ladoux; G. Postiglione; C. Bas; H. Foch; J. Nuns
Abstract: In this paper, the authors present the structure of a new converter for DC arc furnace. This converter uses diode rectifiers associated with choppers to control the arc current. A constant power control is used on the chopper. With this special control, the flicker effect on the power network is very low and the productivity of the furnace can be increased. To evaluate the gain on flicker and furnace productivity, simulations are done with Matlab Software. These simulations take into account arc voltage measurements on a 100 MW DC arc furnace supplied by thyristors rectifiers.

![]() | Harmonics and instabilities in a steel strip continuous electro-galvanizing process-line
By P. Lataire; W. Wymeersch; J. Aelter; J. Cappelle
Abstract: At the Belgian Sikelâ„¢ company steel strip continuous electro-galvanizing process line, large network
instabilities, associated with flicker, harmonics and mechanical resonance have been encountered under
some process operating conditions. The paper describes the plant, the problems encountered, the way it was
analyzed and solved.
The Sikelâ„¢ company is part of the Sidmar - Arcelor group.
