Abstract |
When Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) - with sinusoidal back EMF - are used for applications like pumps and fans simple open loop speed control techniques may sufficient to achieve required control performance. The inherent problem with open lop PMSM drives is instability after exceeding a certain supply frequency. In this paper the open loop stability characteristics of PMSM drives are described in detail. Using a simplified small signal dynamics model of the PMSM it is shown how the system can be stabilized for a wide frequency range, by modulating the supply frequency proportionally to DC-link current perturbations. Implementation of this stabilizer loop in a PMSM drive scheme is described and the experimental results are presented. |
