   Comparison of power semiconductor utilization and losses of 2.3 KV, 3.3 KV and 4.16 KV Neutral-Point-Clamped and Series Connected H-Bridge Multi-Level Converter   [View]

 Abstract   This paper describes the Three-Level Neutral Point Clamped Voltage Source Converter (3L-NPC VSC) and the Series Connected H-Bridge Voltage Source Converter (5L-SCHB VSC, 7L-SCHB VSC and 9L-SCHB VSC) on the basis of the state-of-the-art 1.7kV, 3.3kV, 4.5kV and 6.5 kV IGBTs for 2.3 kV, 3.3 kV and 4.16 kV medium voltage converters. The selection of the power semiconductors, the expense of active components, the installed switch power, converter losses and their distribution, modulation strategies and the harmonic spectra will be compared in detail.
