Abstract   New applications, like electrical power generation, present new challenges in designing induction machines due to specific operation conditions. Wind generation demands the machine for operating doubly fed, requiring an electrical installation based on long cable lengths connecting the converter to the generator. What results in rotor and stator circuits operate under high voltage with high gradients and damped high frequencies which further stresses the motor insulation. To satisfy these application demands well-defined nonstandard machines are required. A component approach does not allow an optimal solution. The success is a function of the collective understanding of the various elements concerning specification, design, application, and integration of the system. The proposed methodology gives a fundamental contribution to the effective inverter/machine high performance and low cost package design based on operating conditions of the inverter drive and alternative machine design, describing the system as a whole.
