Abstract   This paper presents the development of a 200kVA and 200MJ Kinetic Energy Storage System (KESS) Prototype, based on a Switched Reluctance Machine to be applied in High Speed Trains. The main goal is to reduce the electric consumption peaks in a high speed railway substation. Both the reluctance machine design criteria and the power electronic converters solution are presented. The control algorithms for machine-side converter and network-side converter are also discussed. Moreover, a description of the dynamic behaviour of the electrical machine, several experimental results and some ideas about the external control system used for this application are included in this paper. The complete Energy Storage System will be a modular set of several 200 MJ units whose description is the aim of this paper.
