 Abstract   The basic idea of the invention “Natural Field Orientation” (NFO) is described. NFO permits sensorless operation in four quadrants at all speeds. The main purpose of NFO is to create a correct field orientation. Then the complete motor control system with current control loops and different kinds of external control loops can be designed in field coordinates. Estimation of rotor speed and motor torque is described. NFO is designed according to the “internal model principle” and consequently it is important to have accurate parameter values in the model, especially during low speed operation. Two different methods for parameter adaptation are described. One example with simulation and experimental results is presented.
