Abstract   This paper deals with modeling methodologies for CAD of matrix converter systems and their control structures for AC power supplies. The aim is to develop modeling techniques which minimize design effort, reduce computational time and provide robust convergence with all the most common simulation environments. In addition, a Genetic Algorithm based approach for automatic optimization of the structure and the parameters of the digital controller has been developed and successfully used. It recursively run the optimized simulation and finds out the best control solution by minimizing a suitably defined fitness function. Using these techniques, Saber and Matlab-Simulink environments have been employed to design the control for a 40kVA ground power supply unit (400Hz output, 60Hz input) for aircraft servicing. Extensive simulations of this particular application have proved the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies. The control design techniques are applicable to a wider range of systems which have stringent and complex control requirements.
