Abstract   This paper deals with an improved model enabling accurate simulation of inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings of induction machines. This model is based on the coupled magnetic circuits theory. The system of differential equations describing the induction machine behavior in presence of inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings is given. The machine inductances expressions are carried out using the airgap magnetic energy which is determined by means of the winding functions method. In addition, the magnetic circuit saturation is taken into account by including the fundamental saturation harmonic in the inductances calculation. The proposed model allows the authors to study precisely the inter-turn short circuits signature. Finally, the simulation results of the proposed model are validated by means of a 4 kW specially rewound induction motor which is loaded by a DC generator.
