This paper illustrates the design criteria of a 30-krpm 1-kW permanent-magnet (PM) motor, highlighting motor potentials and limits. The procedures for computing magnetic, electrical as well as mechanical quantities are presented, using both analytical and finite element approaches. The flux density in the magnetic circuit, the losses and PM-demagnitization limits are pointed out. Studies of the thermal behavior as well as of the mechanical limits are shown. Some different techniques to retain the PM are discussed. Preliminary test results on a motor prototype are also presented. |
