Abstract |
Trawlers haul large nets at low speed and low
propulsive efficiency. Combining two strategies presented in this
paper can give a worthwhile reduction of fuel cost and CO2
emission.
One strategy is to use a big propeller and two azimuth thrusters
driven by electricity and the other is to develop a light dieselgenerator
using cheap fuel for use on small ships.
A novel engine- generator layout (Junkerator) is described and
tests have shown that it works but the theory is not satisfactory.
A cost-benefit analysis using known prices from an existing
ship compared to some estimated prices for new equipment
indicates that a higher investment can be balanced by fuel cost
savings in less than two years. |
