Abstract |
The Wounded Rotor Synchronous Machines (WR-SM) is very well known in the salient pole configuration for applications as electrical generator operating at constant speed. In this paper, the use of a WR-SM as motor for the electric traction of heavy electric vehicles is investigated. The main features of the proposed drive system are the capability to generate high torque at very low speed without excessive overload of the stator windings and to operate theoretically at constant power untill unlimited speed. Therefore, the proposed drive system is very well suited to satisfy the torque and speed demands of heavy electric vehicles such as busses, trucks, industrial lift trucks and Light Rail Transit (LRT). The analysis of the control strategy, performed using a space vector approach in the d-q plane, has been firstly developed by means of a linear model of the machine, then it has been extended to non-linear operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed drive system has been verified by experimental tests on a laboratory prototype. |
