Abstract |
The paper describes the performance of a variable
speed power generating set driven by a diesel engine. The
generating set is equipped with an axial flux permanent
magnet generator, power electronic converter and DSP
control system. The generating system produces adjustable
output voltage and supply frequency independent of the
generator set engine speed or the load magnitude or
characteristics. The Power Electronic Converter (PEC)
decuples the generator output from the load voltage. There
are two states of system operation: autonomous stand alone
and parallel with the grid. Since the voltage waveform from
the grid is distorted the generating system voltage has to be
adjusted to provide quality of demanded current. If the grid
power is lost, the variable speed set will change to island
operation. The quality of the output voltage produced by the
variable speed generating set is high. The paper presents the
principles of operation of the variable speed generating set
and will discuss performance tests related to 40kVA genset. |
