Abstract   The subject of this paper is a method for sensorless torque control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), which is suitable for low speed including zero, medium and rated speed. The estimation of the rotor position at low speed is based on saturation effects, for medium and high speed an open-loop observer has been chosen. By combining both methods it becomes possible to cover the whole speed range. This procedure is completed by a suitable initialisation, also based on saturation effects, and a method for switching between both techniques.
