| Abstract |
Among topics of study related to the drives, an increasing interest to the electric motor can be recognised in
the last years, justified by different reasons. The first reason is that industrial and civil world is moving from
general-purpose motors to application-oriented motors. Dedicated motors have to meet peculiar
specifications and stimulate new specific standards. According to this trend, motors of different type and
with different topology are designed to comply with the different requirements. New materials are also
available for the motor construction and new manufacturing technologies are experienced. New fields of
application are therefore gained and, as a positive feedback, new motors are invented. World globalisation
may allow a mass production of electric motors even in the case of application-oriented type.
This paper is mainly devoted to the state-of-the-art and the trends in electrical motors for drives. A review of
the their market is at first discussed. Then an exam of the most innovative aspects involving the motors is
proposed. At last, some significant new application fields are illustrated. |
