Abstract   A simple method to estimate the average electromagnetic torque of switched reluctance machines in real time is developed. In addition to estimating torque the energy ratio can also be measured. The estimation technique is realized by integrating the product of phase current and phase voltage. Therefore, the developed technique is directly applicable to machines of any size and configuration because no knowledge regarding the magnetic characteristic is necessary while magnetic saturation is taken into account. Experimental results of the estimation technique are presented and analyzed. With information of the actual average torque or the energy ratio a closed-loop control can be implemented. The SRM control which is developed for an electric-vehicle traction includes the presented average torque estimation. Furthermore, simulation results of the control are discussed.
