Abstract   The paper deals with a new hardware architecture suited for controlling different Voltage Source Inverter topologies, thanks to its flexibility and modularity. The proposed solution allows to reach high performance and at the same time to reduce cost and space so that it can be employed in a wide power range of inverters, from the classical ones, for low voltage applications, to the multilevel inverters, for medium voltage applications. The presented architecture has been used to control three phase two level inverters as well as multilevel inverters with several H-bridges in series in each phase and NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) inverters. The paper is focused on the control architecture characteristics: it presents the control structure and the key points of its realization. One of these points is that all different series of VSI inverters (low and medium voltage, two level and multilevel, with power range from few kilowatt to several megawatt) are identical regarding performance, man-machine interface, diagnostics, interfacing. Pictures of the control modules are included at the end of the paper.
