Abstract | The current trend of electronic industry is towards the manufacture of high power factor equipments, which increases the power quality of a.c. utility. These equipments have to be connected directly to a.c. utility, hence they should be immune to power line disturbances, especially the transient disturbances. The high-energy transients can cause component destruction or overheating and deterioration. Front-end rectifiers may be completely destroyed by such transients during their normal working. This paper presents one such voltage transient, which destroys a diode in the front-end rectifier and gives a procedure to select protective component to prevent such destruction that can be adopted in common designs. A curve for selecting the protective component against such transients is also presented. |
