Abstract   Electrification of rural South Africa has traditionally been implemented using stand-alone renewable energy systems. These are often of a hybrid nature (with diesel generator) and can be integrated to form an isolated weak grid. Also, contemporary scenarios envision extension of the National utility using cheap distribution topologies. The role of PV interfacing within these contexts is identified, and a technical exploration of various topologies and control strategies is presented. Based on this, a design proposal is formulated.
