Abstract |
Mechanical fast-acting current limiting DC circuit breakers are generally used to protect converters and DC power supply systems from short circuit conditions. However, the outstanding properties of modern hybrid current limiting and interrupting circuit breaker (HCB) have been designed to protect many variety of shorted circuits. One of the most interesting applications of the HCB is the fast interruption of the short-circuit currents throughout the modified high voltage DC converters (HVDCC). The principles of the short-circuit current limiting features inside the modified HVDCC using an ultra fast HCB are described. It has been shown in the paper that a new approach for the short-circuit protection of HVDCC would be possible and some of the mechanical circuit breaker shortcomings have been solved. operation of the HCB protection at fault current interruption in the modified HVDCC is illustrated by voltage and current wave forms, obtained from computer simulations. |
