Abstract   This paper deals with a special kind of linear synchronous motor called homopolar motor. The motor is designed to drive autonomous transportation vehicles, optionally equiped with a magnetic levitation system and a contactless energy and information transmission. The main advantages of the motor are the low normal force and the passive track consisting only of iron. In combination with a magnetic levitation system, like the one presented in [4], the vehicle has no wear and no serviceable parts. An application of this system is useful where maintenance would cause expensive plant standstill. Other possible applications are places where dust, caused by the wear of conventional friction drives, is to be kept to a minimum, as in clean rooms or in food industries. Furthermore this system has advantages in low energy consumption and distinctly low noise. A new optimized type of the motor is presented within this paper.
