Abstract   In this paper, we would like to describe some of our own experiences with speed sensorless control of traction drives. Not only laboratory results are discussed but also detailed results obtained with vehicles during test runs on the COMBINOÒ, an ultra-low-floor tram from Siemens Transportation Systems and on a trolley bus. Even with these high-quality traction systems, only those quantities insensitive to interference were measured, namely stator currents and the DC link voltage. Dispensing with the speed sensors does not have any negative effects on the motor control system but increases the availability of the vehicles while reducing the life-cycle costs at the same time.
