Abstract   In most of the ac-dc-ac-converters for low voltage drives aluminium electrolythic capacitors are used for the energy storage in the dc-link. The main design criteria for this type of capacitor is its ripple current capability. In this paper a full investigation of the influence of converter parameters like modulation strategy, grid and load angle, dc-link voltage etc. on the ripple curent is represented. The results are used to minimize the size and the capacity of the dc-link capacitor of a PWM rectifier - dc voltage link - PWM inverter configuration substancially.
