Abstract   Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) attached to a STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) offers a system beyond the classical solutions provided by capacitor banks, capacitive filters, Static Var Compensators (SVC), to meet the stringent power quality requirements of large, highly sensitive industrial facilities. The system, names "Superconducting Energy Management System" (SEMS) is a further development of SMES technology. It constitutes a plant wide "at the fence" protection system that mitigates all incoming voltage sags and power interruptions for facilities in the tens - of - megawatt range. This paper presents information on Industrial Power Quality (IPQ) requirements, a description of a SEMS design, a digital simulation and analysis of SEMS behaviour to provide a cost effective and technically sound solution.
