Abstract   As part of a design procedure for an electrical drive system with a transverse flux machine (TFM) a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) has been carried out. The purpose of the analysis is to identify the hazardous effect of certain failures and to develop methods to prevent hazardous effects. The analysis shows that all failure modes of the drive system can be prevented. Two preventive measures, for an over voltage at the terminals of the machine and an overcurrent in the inverter, are simulated using a non-linear model of the machine. The parameters for the model have been obtained from measurement of an available TFM. The model has been verified with an experimental drive system with TFM The simulation shows that the machine is protected against the failure modes.
