 Abstract   This paper presents a fast fault detection schemefor a hybrid line in a multi-terminal (MT) voltagesource converter (VSC) high voltage DC(HVDC) system. The proposed method is basedon the primary and secondary protection scheme.The discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) withTeager energy operator (TEO) and voltagepolarity comparison are applied to detect thefaulted line for primary and secondary protectionschemes, respectively. The main and backupprotection schemes are based on non-pilot andpilot methods, respectively. The proposed mainand backup methods are robust against highimpedance faults (HIFs). The proposed protectionscheme is verified under different fault pointsapplied on an MT-HVDC test system. The casestudy is performed using PSCAD/EMTDCsoftware. Simulation results show theeffectiveness of the proposed protection methodfor the VSC HVDC transmission line.
