Abstract   Axial flux machines (AFM) are a new trendwithin automotive powertrain development. Their speciallayout requires high demands in finite element method(FEM) simulation. Typically three dimensional (3D) modelslead to high complexity as well as high simulation time.Paired with the innovative topology of externally excitedaxial flux machine (AFEEM), this problem intensifies withthe additional control possibilities. Therefore, to ensure fastdevelopement processes, different techniques are exploredwithin this paper. For the simplification of the simulation atwo (2D) and two and a half dimensional (2.5D) modellingapproach are shown for both machine types. To getcomparable designs and performances, sizing equations arederived. In addition, a fast mapping procedure is providedto also have access to the full speed range of the builtelectric machine. Finally, the resulting data is comparedto 3D FEM results and the speed up of the total processis shown.
