 Abstract   This paper proposes a parameter design method for virtual inertia and damping in virtual DC machine (VDCM) control. First, the VDCM control strategy is proposed and its detailed small signal model is established to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the DC bus voltage. Then a second-order simplified model is developed and the dynamic response indicators are calculated. Based on the quantitative relationship between VDCM control parameters and the DC bus voltage dynamic performance, the feasible region of VDCM parameters is constructed to guide the parameter design. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the propsoed optimisation methods for VDCM control parameters.
