Abstract   Although digital systems have long been standard practice in the field of programmable controllers (PC) and process automation systems fully digital control systems are only now becoming generally adopted in power electronic equipment. This is because of the enormous variety of converter designs has made it difficult to develop the universal modular concepts desired by users as well as manufactures. Moreover, power electronic systems are increasingly being incorporated in higher level control systems, and so the demands placed on these higher level systems with respect to engineering, monitoring and communication also apply in full to lower level control systems. On the basis of a process automation model and a converter control model, these requirements are defined, various possible configurations are discussed and examples of dedicated solutions and system concepts are given.
