Abstract   The usual design criteria of current source inverters only consider the most simple mode occurring during the commutation process. This leads to a considerable limitation of the value of the commutating capacitance and consequently to very high voltages applied on the power semiconductors. The paper considers further commutation modes characterized by overlapping phenomena and conductions of diodes which are reverse biased during the normal commutation mode. By this analysis it is possible to get a design criterion which, besides a substantial reduction of the peak values of the voltages applied on the inverter components, can involve a remarkable reduction of the inductance of the smoothing filter when the maximum operating frequency of the drive is rather high.
