Abstract   Pulse width modulation strategies can also be applied to current-source inverters with fast turn-off semiconductor devices. The voltage peaks accuring during the commutation of such inverters have to be limited by means of additional circuitry. The paper provides an overview of various power section circuit arrangements. A number of aspects of design and rating of the power semiconductor and snubber are examined more closely, and various control methods for PWM current-source inverters are discussed. Experimental investigations were carried out on a 15 kVA converter with transistors and a 110 kVA converter with gate-turn-off thyristors. An explanation with oscillograms is given of the steady-state and transient performance of these converters and also of a special commutation aspect.
