 Abstract   The stationary and dynamic behaviour of axial winders will be investigated. Axial winders are normally used in multimachine-drive-systems. The single drives of this system are coupled by an elastic web of paper, or other material, which should be processed. Starting from the results of the analysis of the stationary and dynamic characteristics new concepts with adaptive controllers on a state space approach will be developed. The results obtained from this new approach will be compared to the results of conventional approaches. Furthermore practical experiments show the advantages of the new concepts. Off-line identification of the system parameters can be realized with the computercontrol-system, so putting into operation is very much simplified.
