Abstract   A cycloconverter drive is presented that consists of three line-commutated six-pulse bridge-converters feeding a three-phase synchronous motor. The open-loop firing control of the converters as well as the closed-loop current control are executed by means of a multi-microcomputer system. As the starpoints of the cycloconverter and of the motor are not connected, a zero voltage component may be added to the output voltages of the cycloconverter. It may be utilized to reduce the fundamental wave reactive power demand of the drive. A new reactive power saving control strategy is introduced and theoretically analysed in comparison with some already known concepts. Finally three selected control strategies are implemented in a laboratory drive and metrologically researched. The results are compared with those of the theoretical analysis.
