This paper discusses the design of a switched mode rectifier / battery charger which utilises a power MOSFET buck converter topology operating directly from the unsmoothed rectified single phase mains supply, and which provides a voltage and current regulated DC output. The converter was designed to supply the average power required by a UPS inverter while charging the battery. The circuit is simple and efficient and the lack of a large smoothing capacitor at the input enables a high power factor to be obtained. Various design aspects are discussed, including the design of the power circuit, the current mode PWM and the voltage and current servo control loops. |
