Abstract   The next generation MICAS-S2 automatic control system features a distributed architecture connected together via a tailor made high performance field bus. The communication principle of source addressed message broadcasting in real time and service accessing from one central point is supported by an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design, thus relieving the device micro-processor from bus duties. The high net data rate of up to 1 Mbit/s and the high data integrity together with built-in fault tolerance and a high system reliability are just a few of the features which make the fieldbus so suitable for a traction control applicatlon. Using one serial bus as backbone for the whole distributed architecture saves connections between individual devices while contributing towards a neat solution with a determined fault tolerance. Specially designed tools facilitate programming, eliminate sources of error and contribute towards a structered signal flow. The Swiss Federal Railways project Bahn 2000 will be the first to make use of this new MICAS distributed control system technology.
