Abstract   This paper presents a design and control approach of a virtual DC-Link for a full GaN-based single phase converter with high power density. Low frequency power ripple on the DC bus is an inherent problem for single phase PWM converter. The topology consists of a totem pole PFC with an added virtual DC-Link, which forces this low frequency power ripple on the DC output side to divert to an auxiliary capacitor. It results in significantly reduced required capacitance and e.g. enables the use of film capacitors instead of electrolytic capacitors. The proposed control for the topology is reduced to a minimum amount of sensor requirements while still maintaining the full functionality without bulky DC-link capacitors. Simulation and and experimental results up to 3 kW are provided to validate the performance of the proposed method.
