Envelope tracking power supplies increase the efficiency of Radio Frequency Power Amplifiers incommunication base stations and mobile handsets. This paper investigates the use of a three-level DC-DC converter topology for envelope tracking applications with increased Peak to Average Power Ratios, wider bandwidths, higher voltages, and widely-varying, dynamic output signals. The selected converter topology provides reductions in voltage stress, switching loss, voltage ripple, filter size, and device-level switching frequency. EPC8004 enhancement mode Gallium Nitride field effect transistors demonstrate total effective switching frequencies up to 40 MHz. A fourth-order low pass filter isdesigned to track an envelope signal with 8 MHz bandwidth. SPICE simulation results and experimental results are included. |
