Abstract   Wide area monitoring, protection and control (WAMPAC) has now become an essential criteria to run a power system infrastructure. To accomplish this using synchrophasor technology, a wide range of PMU designs are available in literature but are very costly due to embedding high speed processor in it to run the complex algorithms. We present here an approach to measure the power system frequency and phase angle using a raspberry pi board to design a low cost PMU. The algorithm is based on zero crossing detection method. Problems found in measurements using edge detection by raspberry pi are solved by enabling the detection of both rising and falling edge. The circuitry, programming logic and results of prototype are discussed here.
